COTTON.—Business has been on a smaller scale this week. The great scarcity of tonnage is much felt by buyers, and doubtless this has 'a good deal to do with the lull in settlements that has taken place, and the consequent fall in the price of the fine to finest staple, The Japan market, notwithstanding the heavy supplies tht. have already gone over, isnot yet satisfied, and the anxiety on the part of the patlyes to hip may be inferred from the fact that one shipper threatened to commit suicide if room for his cargo per Braemar Caale, for Yokohama, were refused him. The accident was averted. Freight to Hiogo, per mail, is $2} per picul; to Nagasaki, $1.50, and to the latter port, sailing vessels now demand $14.
EXCHANGE.—Very little has been done in Sterling. Rates wore weak at 5s. 9Jd. for Bank paper, and 5s. 94d. a 5s, 99d. for Credite, at which most of the business has been done. This morning, quotations are rather firmer, two Banks quoting 5s. 9) and later on tone opened at 5s. 9d. Fraues have been placed at 7.3%, but closing rate is 7.35. On india, a fair business has been done at Rs, 305} a 306 for wire and post. On Hongkong, the Banks still quote 27{ per cent. discount.
