The Officials and the People

The officials are making Jaudable efforts to improve the condition of the people here by introducing large quantities of mulberry trees for the purpose of silk culture. The people-in this city and neighbourhood are Al very poor compared with those of adjacent districts. The cause of this is the almost total destruction of the cities and villages in this section during the Taiping rebellion. It is true that there been a gradual imrovement in the condition of the people of late, due principally to the foreign trade of the port; but the introduction of silk culture, if successful, will also be of great benefit to many.
