The Government and Mr

RHODES

24th June, On the Slst of December last, when the news of Jamesou's raid first reached London, Mr. Chamberlain said: "If it can be proved that the British South Africa Company set Dr. Jameson in motion, or were privy to his marauding action, her Majesty's Government would at once have to face a demand that the Charter should be revoked and the Corporation dissolved." No doubt these brave words were in the mind of Dr, Leyds, when he wired to Mr. Chamberlain, as reported in the Reuter's telegram which we published yesterday morning, "strongly pressing him to prosecute Mr. Cecil Rhodes, Mr. Belt, and Dr. Harris, greatly regretting the delay of the enquiry into the complicity of the Chartered Company, and urging the complete transfer of the Chartered Company's territory to Imperial rule."
