The situation was so serious now that was necessary to appeal to Consular aid. This was done in the middle of January, and after long delays, a special deputy was sent Tsingkiangpu from the Taotai at Chinkiang who succeeded in arresting the chietculprit, and arranging a settlement. After the first arrest was made overtures were proposed by the officials, asking that the case be not pressed further and offering to make full re—paration for the wrong done.
