A Huge Bazaar

All the Chinese shops in the settlements absolutely disappeared during the siege and its sequel, and the like took place in the city, The keepers were probably all *San fae-tze," but they took care to put away in fe places as many of their goods as practicable. Now there being no stores to be had, the whole length of Victoria Road on each side is one long bazaar, where are displayed dry goods, China-ware, hardware, lamps, and all the varied contents of the fully furnished Chinese shop, while beyond there is a vegetable, fruit, and game market on a scale sufficiently large to meet the wants of the varied and miscellaneous population. The scenes witnessed on this thoroughfare are as cbaracteristic of the strange new tunds as any to be found in China. The riesha still abounds, but in it often appears a little donkey urged to the top of his speed by 8 French, Japanese, or German soldier.
