Thursday was set apart by National and State proclamations asa day of mourning and prayer for the late President. Never before in the history of the country has a similar event been observed with so much feeling and with such unanimity. Suspension of business was voluntary, riot compulsory, but taking Boston as an illustration, not only could one not purchase any article in any store, but fruit stands, boot-black stands, saloons, barber-shops, and even drug stores were closed. The display of mourning decorations onthe buildings has been a remarkable one.
