The Royalist Plot

The Senate has met and his entrusted a Committee with the onerous duty of investigating the plot against the State. From what evidence as been already made public, it is clear that a genuine conspiracy was on foot in the interests of the Duke of Orleans. The chief con-spiraters in custody are not, perhaps, very formidable personages, but they will have to pay the penalty. As the well-known puts it, they would have been patriots if thy' had succeeded but, having failed, they are traitors. Jules Guérin, after defying the authorities for 37 days in Fort Chabrol," meekly surrendered when the police threatened to storm his stronghold, and has taken his place among his fellow conspirators.
