Sung Ch'un (Manchu), Director-General of the Grand Canal, reports that although in June last there were numerous heavy rain storms which filled the rivers and threatened to break down the Grand Canal dykes, he was fortunate enough, thro the watchfulness and energy of his sab. ordinate officers, to take the necessary precautions so that the threatened disaster was avoided, and peace has reigned in the whole region under the jurisdiction of the memorialist, tight up to the coramencement of the cold weather. This, memorialist also considers, is due to the protection afforded by the river gods, and I hereby command that 15 sticks of great Tibetin incense be sent to the said memorialist who shall offer sacrifice in my name to the river gods in gratitude therefor.
