This is the season for kite-fying and seemingly the Chinese have nothing to learn in this line. Overhead on every side may be seen kites of all shapes: birds, fish, centipedes, butterflies, geometrical Agures in squares, triangles and cylinders, and varying in size from one to sixty feet in length, Some of the large rectangles are decorated with characters or pictures; one of the most characteristic of the latter was a pig with four little ones; none of the Northern razorbacks, but a genuine saddle-backed pig, one of the Island's chief products. Aside from the elian harp attachments, the sport of kite-flying is varied by the attachment of lanterns in the evening and of fire-crackers in the day time. By an ingenious arrangement of a butterfly kite running on the string of a larger kite, a bunch of firecrackers with a stick of lighted incense is sent high into the air before going off.
