LONGFELLOW

A most enjoyable and instructive lecture on " low" was given by Mr. Arthur Mayall on Wednesday night under the auspices of the Union Church Literary and Debating Society at the Union Church fall.

The lecturer was 80 familiar with bie subject as to be able to rely mainly on notes, and in consequence the lecture was quite free from the "dryasdust character that a more " bookish ® speaker might have given to it. Coupled with a great amount of humour, the lecturer evidenced a wide soquaintance with poetic literature in general, and was able therefore to adopt a critical as well as an approciatin rude toward the post's productions. Having hed the privilege Of meeting the poet Longfellow some months before his death, Mr 1 gave avery interesting account of the interview, investing the lecture with personal character that added to the enjoyment of the audience.

At various points in the lecture musical illustrations of the poot's sonja were ven, the following artistes taking part:

rs. "Railton, Mesars. Railton, Lester, and Whittick, and Mr. Hall as acoomist. "The Bridge, " "The Arrow and the Song," "Excelsior," "Te Village Blacksmith" snd "Onaway! Awake, Beloved," wore chosen as illustrative of the poot'sart as a song-writer.

Mr. Mayall concluded his lecture with a recital of The Warning" and "The Arsenal at Springfield." usual votes of thanks were given and supported by the Rev. C. E. Darwent and Dr. Gilbert Reid and the lecturer acknowledged them in a short and humorous reply.
