1689-1694, Sinza Road

Just as the Mih-ho-loong No. 2 truck on fire; Without unharnessing the pony the reel -went straight tothe spot, arriving' there in less: than 60 seconds from the -recoipt of the message. A stream promptly put on soon stopped the fre, and when the: other Companies arrived it was.all over. The outbreak occurred in a large store room at the back of -Messrs, Llowellyn's-promises. The room: was lock.

the time, and an assistant noticing strong smell of smoke opened a door te see what was-the matter. The room was full: of flames and smoke. The fire is believed to en started by the releesness of a coolie, who is said to have loft a lighted candle on top of a packing case. Very little damage was done. The Boneral alarm was not rung for the outbreak, with guns, parangs, spears, and blow-Pipes, swept down upon the residents of the little Colony at Kawang Railway Station, midway between Jesselton and Papar.

Therband divided into two parts, one of a-hundred remaining concealed as a reserve on the top of-a hill, while the other fifty rushed down on the Settlement, butchered the inmates of the Chinese shops, attacked' the railway station, smashed the telephone, killed the wife and child of the station-master, the latter saving his life by hiding ina bush. The band of murderers then turned their attention to the poor coolies, most of them -Chinese, killing and wounding in savage fashion right and left. The railway driver was their next victim, a speedy and terrible end coming to him and his wife. The carnage then became general, males, females and innocent babes were butchered in cold blood—or rather in the lust for blood. The houses and huts in the Kampong were set fire. to next in the brutal career of the savages, and when nothing was left but dead bodies and wounded people, ashes and desolation, the sanguinary wretches went their way.

The survivors, one native fireman, the station master, with a few of the wounded coolies, ran down the line in the direction of Jesselton for their lives.

By putting.steam on the. construction engine stationed there, the terrible news was carried to Jesselton, putting all the inhabitants of the place into the greatest consternation.

The total number of killed was twenty. No record is yet available of the number of wounded.—* China Mail."

In the Jockey Cup, Toog's Otter or Irvine Prove the pea, and Amour, Bronze. wing, and Dynamo should run well.

In the Hart Legacy Cup, Manobi looks a "cert." Magic, 'The' Busman, and Loch Gail may follow him' home.

The Gold Challenge Cup is perhaps the most interesting race of the day, and in this We commend' Alverstone and' Friendship, with Zambesi, Monsoon, and: Amour for the remaining honours.

In the Kiangsu Cup, Sphere should cary off first place, with Jeteam and Vancouver in close attendance. For outsiders, His Majesty and Jaggers take the eye most.

In the Grand Stand Stakes Messrs, Four Stars' Lyra soams to be the "pea" but.the best of Cleugh's stable will undoubtedly yo close, and Cyrano, with a run, should make good show, In the Detby, Messrs. Scandypatis stable was for a long time favourite, but the order of things is now changed. Friendship has taken the leading place in the junior lot. teries, with Seandypat's best a good second. Second honours seem to be divided between Monsoon and Femando's best. One that hus been going cheaply for this: race in the lotes and may tum out trumps, is J. Mowat's Coriander, in whom the owner' has great faith, and Toeg be worth an investment.

Tt is early yet to: deal with the second day's racing, aport from the Derby; but with reference to the third day, we may state that a sweep has.been got up between owners of ponies entered, at $50 each, and no man has drawn his own pony. The total amount subscriptions up 0 date total about $1,500, and this should prove a sporting Taw' Beports:-
