Hey; 1914, Capt. W. E. Sauer 1914, Capt. W. E. Sauer. — CORRESPONDENCE — CLEANLINESS IN THE STREETS

To the Editor of the "Norri-Cuixa Dairy News."

Siz,—Your leaderette in yestering, it is be hoped, will assist in bringing about an amelioration of existing conditions. Seeing, however, that th" danger to health alone from is filthy practice is so great, the ing of your article errs on the side of moderation. It would seem, too, that it is the ''promiscuous'' manner in which those finding it necessary (1) to spit (or create "the other nuisance") do so to which your correspondents ea far have objected. Most of ne who have been in China for a-year or two are fully aware that the Chinese ex tectorate in the streets rather more than we do without considering it anything extraordinary, but. you will find on inquiry around Shanghai that most of the more educated class of Chinese have for some time past noticed, and strongly objected to, the way in which their passage along the streets UN

877 endangered by the present state of affairs.

I believe that, were notices exhibited prohibiting expectoration on our pavements, beneficial effect would soon be noticeable, and that where not so—e.g. in the case of the insolent class (far more numerous than you would appear to think)—a good box on the ears from a policeman now and then would work wonders.

T am sorry to se your correspon: dent "G.N.," who frequently writes sound sense, descending to the extent of rather making a joke of what is becoming, or rather has become, not only a nuisance but a very serious menace to the health of the Settlement. It is not too much to say that to take one's women folk along our pavements nowadays is during the greater part of the day a very risky proceeding, and it is high time that a state of affairs worse than I have anywhere—in other treaty ports and in the interior should be taken in hand, T am, eto,
