News of the American boycott has only recently reached the city and such a mixture of fiction and truth could hardly be conceived. The rumour was afloat that the Americans had killed thirty thousand of the Chinese in America and groat many were burned. It was also added that all the Americans in Changsha had not been on the streets for a month, fearing violence from the people. It took the news a long time to get to Chenchou and it seems to have gained added force in the coming. Some of the friends of the foreigners have tried to dispel the fear and clear up the rumours, but many seem to think that it is all true and are even willing to believe worse. Notwithstanding all this there has been very good attendance at the preaching services of the chapels of the city.
