SHAOHSING, CHE

6th Noveimber.

The First Frost of the year came this morning. The rice is nearly all harvested and preparations are being made for the winter. If last: night is a fair sample of what we are to expect, the winter promised to be a very cold one, The crops have been plentiful and the people seem tobe contented.

The Boycott still in force to a certain extent. Placards wore posted in the neighbourhood of one of our country chapels, saying that since the power of foreign nations was waning because the Chinese had agreed not to buy foreign goods any longer, now was good time to root out the foreign religion, therefore all the people wore asked' to, come together on a certain day at neet {boing Sunday,) to tear down the chapel and kill the Christians. The matter was presented to the istrict magistrate, who is a very incompetent old man, but no satisfaction could be obtained from him so, there being only four days to spare, we toolkit to the prefect who is a very competent. official. Ho suid we need not trouble sbout the matter further as he would see to it at otice which he did. Soldiers were. sent, and so, of course, nothing occurred, Wo were gratified too that the leading men of the village of their own accord agreed, to.sov that nothing of the sort should occur again. Some firms still will not American oil but others are selling it again, A business firm which deals. largely in foreign goods, and which has cashed our cheques for us, now refuses to' do so any longer, although it is a greater accommodation to them thai it is to ni, The District and Prefectural Schools are in full operation again, but they, are" not very. largely attended, for what reason i cannot ascertain. There are only about forty, students in the profectural school, in spite of the fact that, board. and tuition are free and. the.entrance requirements are nominal.
