Concurrently with one scheme to beautify London it is only fair to mention another scheme for the beautifying of Londoners. Some years ago one of the home journals conducted a correspondence on the relative attractions of London girls and provincial gi The majority of opinion, if we recollect rightly, was all in favour of London girls. At the same time it was admitted that there might be room for improvement even in this fair company and who then shall say that there is not at least as much room for improvement in London men? Still it was difficult to decide how that improvement might be effected, and thus we may find merit in the Guild of Beauty which has been founded at Patoey, whence, it is hoped, its principles may radiate to other less introspective districts. The object of the Guild, which is entirely composed of children, " is to train the young members to admire and secure neatness sod order With this end in view each member of the organization is bound. down by four simple rules I promise not to throw down paper, orange-peel, etc., in the playground, streets, and parks.
I promise to do everything I can to add to the bright and tidy appearance of my home.
I promise aot to be guilty of any dirty or rads habits.
I promise that I will care for either plant or a pet in my home.
What the collective parents, of the Guild have to say to the last pledge is not recorded: there are some parents who might be described as radically at enmity with the joy" of having pets in the home. But the children have embraced the idea with great enthusiasm. It might be argued that these rules do not cater for that special attractiveness of good looks for which those of us who: are not so gifted by nature may be secretly-yearning. But is surely 8 superficial criticism which has lost sight of the great axiom that if beary of mind does not actually candace to beauty of person, at least 80 long as we possess the one we can afford to disregard the other.
