JUST INDIGNATION

To the Editor of the "Nonra-Crxa Dany News."

Sin,—A cowardly and brutal assault was committed this morning by a foreigner who, accompanied by his wife, was driving up Broadway.

'A Chinaman from Nanking who had landed from a steamer shortly before, on his first visit to Shanghai, and carry the inevitable bundle, when opposite Ching Chang's store stepped off the footpath to make way for another pedestrian, thus coming within striking distance of this Jehu's ever-swinging-whip, unfortunately just at the right distance to receive the full force of the Josh, which caught the poor countryman at the extreme edge of the lower eyelids and right down the neck on the left, the man having th his back to the approaching vehicle:—an eighth of an inch higher and the poor fellow's eyes would most probably have been permanently injured—as it was unable to sce for fully five m nutes, and a weal was raised quite half an high. The cowardly deed was witnessed a foreigner, and relief at once afforded, after which the man was ind go to the police station to lo a complaint, but while there, on learning a foreigner had committed the assault, refused to prosecute; those who are con: versant' with the treatment frequently accorded a Chinese complainant in a native Court, can well understand refusal (the' more especially when complainant is a country yokel), and to the regret of many, no just punishment. has resulted.

Some satisfaction, however, was obtained by the information acquired, that owing to several complaints ' bein; lodged by natives against them, the pol have been instructed to keep a sharp eve on the drivers of this particular dogcart, and it is to be hoped, should occasion arise, exemplary ptinishmeat. will follow the next offence.

All those accustomed to either n or driving are aware the majority of "Jacks Ashore" seem to have an idea the roads are their peculiar property, and made for their especial benefit.

It is also equally well known the Chinese by their lethargic behaviour are not only a great source of annoyance, but a positive danger—is no crime, and although great i is engendered, no one has the rij ko the law into a ly deprive a fel-re of his eyesight, when a ent of the whip round. the nether would not only serve the purpose of relieving the driver, but make John Chinaman look a little more liv Enclosing Lam, ete., A Hater oF Issustice.
