THE BOYCOTT

Lo the Editor of the "Nonra-Curwa Dany News."

S1,—From remarks I have heard ro-cently amongst my native friends it seems to me thet the instigators of this boycott of Americen goods very groatly ovorestimate the effect it will have on' the American proploas a whole, and that simply through crass ignorance of well-known facts. For instance, are under the impression that the Uaited States ship forty. per cent of their cotton manufactures to Chins, whereas it is only forty per cent of whut is "exported." What that "mounts to can be shown by a fow simple figures. The shipments to China this year, which promise to establish a record, will prob bly Amount te between 6,000,000 and 7.000, 000 pieces. For the sake of argument say they will be 8,000,000 pieces. These, taken at forly yards por piece, equal 320,100,000 yards. Say they average 3.20 yards por Ib. lat menus 10), (0,000 Ibs. of cotton 200,000 bales Last year the consumption of cotton in the United States amounted to 3,775,000 bales of 500 Ibs. each so that, on the above basis China takes 5.3 per cent of the total output. This is admitted to be the most important branch of the trades affected; the percentages on flour and oil must be much less; so what influence can such a small percentage of the whole trade exert on the masses in the States, the bulk of whom know and caro less about China than you or Ido about the moon tunall minority of iutecested portion. 1 The present evitation simply affects a ver

certainly is a big thing to some of them and thus they will suffer a cruel wrong, as well as'many honest and respectable men in this country, simply to carry out the ign rant ideas of nhondful of malcontents thus misnpplying the Western they have received, and not realising that a mastery of principles of political economy requires the close study of pretty well a life-time.
