On the evening of September 2, about eight o'clock, a man dressed in military uniform was seen standing outside his house, in the street, holding in his hand, at arm's length, 'a young girl about eighteen years of age, says the Canton correspondent of the "China Mail The girl is described as very beautiful. The man, who was her father, was cuffing her and asking, "If that was the way she acted when his back turned, and went out talking with a young man, without any sanction from any one." The enraged father then produced a youth, from somewhere, and proceeded to thrash him too. It seems from what transpired that the young couple were courting after the approved pattern of the West, and were discovered by the infuriated parent.
