A Pretty Sight

'The much-talked-of gwotte formed a most artistic and interesting interlude in the play. One heard suppressed exclamations of ad non every side as the identity of the various performers was Gisguise' of powder and patches and gradually recognised under the pretty tirade against present-day luck of grace I fully expected that some of the mon would upset their equilibrium whilst performing the pirouette or that some of the ladies would sit down on the floor whencurtseying. Iwas therefore agreeably surprised to find that the gavotte continued its course with an unprecedented amount of grace and naturalness, A Discordant Note.

There was only one little item that could be found fault with and that was of so trivial character that it is hardly worth mentioning, as it is nothing more or less than the colour of the ribbons which wore attached to. fan carried by Lady Mary in the ballroom scone. The great mass—for so it seomod—of brilliant magenta ribbons completely spoilt the artistic poignancy of her beautiful gown which was composed of exquisitely designed Louis brocade in whith tiny wreaths of roses appeared on a blue and white striped background. It was worn over @ cream satin petticoat festooned ruchings vi ribbon which exactly matched the delicate colours in the brocade, but alas, the dainty Sevres-like effect of the whole was completely overshadowed by the possessive qualities of the ribbon in question which unfortunately also quarrelled unmercifully with the infinitely becoming costume worn by Monsieur Boaucaire. Not the pathos and dramatic tensity in the world could take the rich shade of marigold yellow harmonise with the poignant pink of the ribbon, Next week I hope to devote more space to a description of some of the gowns which wore very beautiful indeed.
