Medallions of white satin'criss-crossed with narrow goldi'braid and surrounded with a flower design! carried out in narrow ribbon, make %a most effective trimming. Another dainty decoration may be easily fashioned in spare moments. Tiny slim-waisted bows are formed with quarter-inch ribbon, Jando then sewn into position on the yoke, flounce, or whatever surface it is intended to adorn, Care must be taken'not to stitch it too much or too tightly, otherwise the artistic natural effect will be spoilt.
The Romney hat, ibetter known as the ''mushroom, " still continues in favour, probably because it is so universally becoming and so easily trimmed. Just a wreath of flowers or 'a big ruche of ribbon is all that is wanted.
Cheating at Bridge.
T recently read an article in a home journal on the above subject, in which the writer asserts that he is positive that card-sharping is being widely practised by lady Bridge players. He then proceeds to explain the mysteries of "counting down" and " picking' up," both of which are accomplished whilst shuffling the cards, and after a lengthy description of a few of the methods adopted by professional card-sharpers, he mentions " border line impostures " which may be said to be on the "frontier of honesty," and which in my humble opinion are distinctly dishonest. Amongst others he mentions the fact of conveying to one's partner a certain meaning, by the tone of the voice, which reminded mo also of another case in point, where two lady players were found conveying information by means of the jewellery they wore, along neck chain adorned with various charms being one of the most convenient means of cabling information. Another source of complaint is the present volume mous style of dress, which affords covers for secret pockets, and is therefore too well adapted to the art of cheating. date Bridge Regulations.
At this rate we may shortly expect to hear of the introduction of an authentic Bridge dress which will of necessity be totally void of superfluous trimming. and will exclude everything in the way of jewellery. The necessary conversation will be regulated by means of a tuning-fork to indicate the only tone of voice that may be used, and no bridge outfit wilh be complete without a metrophone to measure the speed at which the declaration may be made. All that will then be required will be a patent shuffling machine to minimise the dangers that may be encountered when playing with an expert shuffler, and no doubt some inventive genius will give his attention to the subject, and by so doing earn the everlasting gratitude of that large army of human beings known as Bridge demons," or Bridge Cranks." And when all these things come to pass, it seems to me that life to a great many people will not be worth living, because forsooth Bridge will not be worth playing.
