Artillery Inspection

The Artillery mustered at the gu: hed 9 am., the Point practice being as well a competition for the " Little" Cap as a parade for inspection by Major-General Hatton. There waa an excellent master, only two points being lost for absentees. The men wore naturally keen, as is shown by the fect that all four guns were hooked in and earned the maximum marks (5) in very few minutes from the time the order was given. Arrived at the Point, the guna were got into position, the muddy state of the ground calling for unusual exertion on the part of the men, the guns having to be ed through quagmires and ponds before a suitable firing place could be arrived at. After a brief interval for tifin, tanget practice commenced, common shell, segment and shrapnel being used, with a final round of case shot. The shooting was good hour and the maximum points were on no less than four occasions by each gun. No. 2 sub-division was first with 36 points, followed by Nos. 1 and 4 with 35 points each, and No. 3 with 32 points. Gans were then limbered up and the battery came back ata smart pace to the gun-shed, where Capt. Marshall, who is shortly leaving for home, bade farewell to the battery. He said that the work of the men throughout the training season had been most-satisisetory, and particularly so that day. Major-Genera) bly surprised with the work off the Hatton had exprossad himself as

battery. The accuracy of the firing was much better than he expected to find, the laying was done very quickly indeed, and there was no confusion, but every: thing was carried out ina very order! manner. In conclusion, Capt. Mai bade good-bye to the members of the battery, thanking the non-commissioned officers for the support they had giver him, and the men for the efficient way ing- which they had carried out their work. posted He hoped that they would give the same support to Lieut. Crossley, in whpee command the battery would be until his return.
