The Foreign Trade of

IN JAPAN — JAPAN

The aggregate sums subscribed for starting new enterprises or expanding old ones during the period from July 1905 to November 1907 are £1,830,000,000. But the amounts: actually registered as pledged on account of new enterprises or expansion: of old totals are only £597,000, 000. It will thus be seen that more than £1,200,000,000 remain to be accounted far. Out of this latter amount, a sum of over £300, (000,000 represents the of companies which have been dissolved without coming to maturity, and:£900,000,000 represent the amount pledged on account of enterprises of which the future hangs still in the The returns of the foreign trade of Japan up to December 30 are now known. The exports aggregated £430,516,000, being an: increase of £6,762,000 as compared with the figures for last year; and the imports totalled £494,102,000, being an increase of £75,480,000 as compared with last year. Thus the balance of trade against. Japan was Y. 63,676,000 but the outflow of gold was only Y. 11,733,000. It will be seen that trade increased in bulk as compared with last year by upwards of 82,000,000. It is more than probable that hed not the financial trouble in the United States suspended the.export of silk ither, and had not the depreciation of ver checked the export of cotton yarns and cotton piece-gonds to China, the trade would have totalled 950,000,000 approximately and the excess of imports would have been reduced to some 55,000,000. rided per head of population, Japan's foreign trade now represents Y. 19 for every anit of her people.—The Japan Daily Mail.
