A solemn requiem mass for the late King Carlos and the Crown Prince of Portugal was held at St. Joseph's Church, French Concession, on Wednes-7. Invitations were issued in the name of the Consal-General for Portagal and the Portuguese community, The Consular Body, officials of the Supreme Court, and Chinese officials were accommodated in the transept, and the Portuguese commanity and officers from the warships in port were seated in the pave. Lt.-Colonel M. Watson and several officers of the 8. V. C. also attended. The interior of the Church was elaborately decorated in black and silver. Black banners, shields and streamers, emblazoned with texts from the penitential psalms, were displayed in the nave, transept snd chancel, and " large catafalque, draped in black and silver, and surrounded by candles, occupied the centre of the nave, The Portuguese Company of the S.V.C., whose members wore black shoulder straps and rosettes, farnished " guard of honour. Seven men, fally armed, mounted guard over the catafalque, and took a prominent part in the service, the military orders given from time to time being in striking contrast with the rest of the service. Dumont's Mass was sung, set to plain chant by Pere Basuia, Pre Arnaud officiated, assisted by Pere Savory as deacon and Pere Haman as sub-deacon.
Pere Basuia's "Jesu Salvator" and Pie Jesa " were sung after the Offertory and Elevation respectively, and Battmanie's "Sortie" was played at the conclusion of the service. Particular interest attached to this music as Pere Basuia was formerly member of the Missions Etrangéres here. The most picturesque portion of the service was the asperging and censing of the catafalque, when the officiating priests, in their black and silver vestments, descended from the chancel, attended by a retinue of acolyes, bearing candles. The stately service Rosd, of the Roman Church suffered somewhat from the impossibility of obtaining a fall choir; alo from the absence of the organist, which necessitated the use of harmonium.
