A Would-be Assassin in the Palace.
A Poking correspondent reports that Jate on the night of the 9th inst. a eunuch on duty near the apartments of the Empress Dowager discovered a stranger hiding behind a screen, who upon being questioned as to how he had got inside the forbidden precincts could give no'eo! reply. The man was thereupon and a sharp dagger found on his person The next morning the would-be assassin was handed over for trial before the High Court of Three—this is the highest Court of Justice in the Empice—composed of the President of the Board of Punishments (who acts as the President of the High Court of Three), the President of the Censorate, and the President of the Court of Revision, and the prisoner having confessed that he had entered the Palace to assassinate the Empress Dowager, he was the next day (Lith instant) taken before the entrance of the Vegetable Markot—tho usual execution ground of large cities, as it is generally the most crowded portion of. a city—and there decapitated. It is not stated whether the would-be assassin: confessed to having accomplices in his nefarious design.
