Threat of General Strike

Nothing transpired during the week end in connexion with the "No taxation without representation" agitation which would lead to the belief that the matter would be settled, and although in a letter addressed' by the Chinese to the Council a certain modification of their original demand was made. the Council's attitude is that there can be no negotiation on that matter until the threat of non-payment of taxes is removed.

From the Council's point of view things are progressing normally in connexion with those Chinese who have failed to pay their rates, summonses have been issued.

In the meantime the Chinese are reported as taking the attitude that unless*they receive an assurance from the Council to the effect that an Advisory Committes of five Chinese will be appointed as soon as possible, a general strike of shopkeepers will be called some time this week. an eventuality for which, as already stated in these columns, the Council is fully prepared.
