The National Debt

The meeting of the Patriotic Soc to which I referred in my previous letter, was held recently in the Prefectural College under the presidency of a promment local gentleman. The conven-era were disappointed that there was not a larger attendance. The superintendent of the police and the superintendent of education in this prefecture were present, but the prefect and other officials were absent, being represented by deputies. There were a number of speakers and a series of resolutions was adopted, some of which are as follows That arrangements should be made with other societies for the adoption of 8 uniform system for collecting funds.

That the Imperial Government be asked to refund all existing foreign lo and to contract no new ones, That the money now being subscribed should be used by the Government for no other purpose than that of clearing off the national debt.

That these subscriptions are purely voluntary and must not be regarded as assessments on property, nor become permanent taxes Tt was agreed to telegraph to the Imperial Goverament asking it reso-lately to prevent Italy from opening up settlements or trading in this province.

For some time there have been persistent rumours that Italy had designs pon Chékinog and had already her men-of-war at band in case of need. It is difficalt to find oot what has given rise to such ramours.
