Sadler — Sinza Stone Bridge

nation of the correspondence is subject, contained in the Gazette of January 20, the following further letter la ordered for publication. It in understood that—representa have been made to the native anthoi ith a view to obtaining their content the construction of a modern steel bridge the manner soggeated Council Room, Shanghai, August 15, 1910. to my letter enbject of the: re-erection of the Sinza Stone Bridge in steel to render it available for carriage traffic, I have the honour to inform you that I have recently learnt that a contract for the work has been or is about to be concluded under the management of the Chapei Constabolary;; and that although replacement of the old stone bridge, more modern stractare is apparently intended, its character and cost as designed will fall far short of the public requirements, The importance of rebuilding this antiquated and dangerous bridge bes been realived for many yea project of ite replacement hi among the Council of the present structure, which caused #0 much regrettable lose of life in May 1907. The Council is thus evidently precluded from assenting to any incomplete or unsatisfactory method of executing the long-deferred scheme, bat the necessity of withholding from the native contractors the requisite permission to effect a junction with the southern bank of the Soochow Creek woald be faced with great reluctance.

I have accordingly the honour to request that verbal representations be made to the Taotai at an early opportfering on the Conocil's behalf a acting in ce-operation with the employes of the native authorities; and I trast that by this means all further difficalty will be avoided.

T have the honour to be, Your obedient servant, Chairman.
