A Haunt of Celebrities

One of thoro.small Parisian cele-britich who shine only on reflected light hax followed the classic example of many others of his kind und has retired to the country to "plant his cabbages." He is Manigre (no one ever thought of referring to him og Monsieur Maniére) and for many years he kept 'a. small cafe restaurant and tobacco shop at the corner of the Rue Cau-Inincourt and the square of the same name, at Montmartre. No one knows exactly how his establishment emerged from the obscurity generally enveloping such places, but something about it attracted the attention of the literary and artistic folk of Montmartre, and they began to dine at Maniére's. 'The great Anatole France often went there. Other habitues were Viaminck, Derain, Suzanne Valadon, Andre Warnod, and Steinlen the' caricaturist, generally accompanied by his wife and several cats and frequently, between drinks or courses, plying his yeneil and sketching Montmartre types on the ack of the menu. rumour says, who tole France to Maniére's, and Maniére could write a book, if he were so minded, full of tales about the queer doings and sayings of his celebrated customers, but it is tone thing to feed geniuses and qui another thing to describe them in the written word, and the chances are that Maniére will keep his tales for the benefit of his cronies in the evening of his days.
