Recently, continued Dr. Tyau, there has been some misunderstanding in regard to the attitude of the National Government towards the Press. The National Government, he said, has no desire to suppress the Press. As proof of this he referred to the recent speech of General Chiang Kai-shek to the Journalists of Peking. General Chiang Kai-shek pointed out, he said, how disappointed he was to notice such a lack of topical comment, in the Peking and Shanghai papers fon the doings of the Government. As General Chiang warned his hearers, however, it must be remembered that the National Government was recently established and there were many reactionary elements in the country which were aiming to overthrow it, Criticism, therefore, must be constructive in' its nature and the reports published in the Press should be substantiated by facts. Any malicious fabrication or deliberate attack on the Government could not be tolerated whether published in a foreign or a Chinese newspaper.
