During the course of the tiffin. programme of Chi ie was given, Mrs, Ellsworth Huggins, Mrs. Walter Dillingham of the Mission and Mrs. Hilton J. Helmick a1 the centre of the front row acquire the almost super-regal. man-her affected by most of Hollywood's Tuminaties. She admits that this is possibly Because she has never acted There, in fact the poor soul spent halt her time in Shanghai patient! explaining to people who asked he. what it was Like to be a Hollywood sar, that all her" film experience war' gained in the days when Hollywood was just another small tows in California. Miss White was quite relueant to indulge in reminic~ ences about her daring "stunts by-gone days and at the slightest provocation would lead, the conver tation into "horsey" channels. Small wonder, when her prize race horse "Les Bossons" was runner-up for the Grand Prix at Paris last year and is considered by experts to have a good dience of winning this time. Those of us in Shangh who dream day and night of our our "Merries" and our can sympathize. with her preoccupation.

Tt was a big feather in the cap of the TA.G.—it one may apply such such 'a metaphor—to have entertain td Miss White at a very. pleaser Tittle reception last week. Hats off to. the members of this group, {neldently, for their boundless en. thusiasm and determination to mate success. of their organization. Already they have planned a most intriguing programme of lectures and discussions for the next few weeks, the next of which is a talk by Dr. Lownenburg next Tuesday, about whom one hears rumours of great fame and progress in the Ssycho-analytical world.

Cocktail Parties This week has seen the usual round of cocktail parties—how would we Dass those long hours between the office and dinter at this time of the year without them? It seems a little early for tennis and yet too warm for cosy evenings with a book by the fire. Mr. Harry Orr's, given just before the Easter holidays, was a very cheery affair, with the Unior Irsurance Company' of Canton wei represented of course. Then Mrs. Tacbel Singer entertained for Mr. many press notices, and letters con~ cerning It in one way or another. Then followed close in their wake Interviews with Me, Coward, who Pat, "whose friends tell her that Shanghaj agrees wich her far too well for her to he allowed to go tack to. Mr, and Mrs. A. C. Leith are taking the Winters' place during their ab. sence and have already moved into their charming house on Bubbling-'Well Road.

And talking of leave-takings, as someone remarked the other "day how different is the feeling between saying "bon voyage" to those who are departing for a few months' home leave and saying "good.bye _for fever" to friends who will not return to these shores. The departure of Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Welle with their family is going to leave a gap which il not easily be filled. Their faculty for friendship, both in business and social circles, is well known.

They have never tired of dispense ing hospitality and a warm-hearted welcome to all who have visited their beautiful "home in Route [Dupleix, and their many friends wish them all the happiness they deserves in the future.
