In this year's Schneider Cup race, the official timekeepers will use.an improved cinema apparatus which dispenses with stop-watches and uses a master tuning-fork as the measure of time. This fork is electrically connected with two cinema -caiheras, and, as the seaplane approaches the sighting post, the camera records its progress continuously, so. that subsequent examination of the film can decide the exact moment when it entered the measured distance. The tuning-{ork is set to make 20 vibrations second and-it in turn controls a rotating metal shutter-in the cinema camera with perforated numbers. 'These are photographed together with the passage of the machine across the-lens, and afterwards, by' means of a formula, the actual speed recorded.can be worked out Jwith a time accuracy, it is understood, of 100th part of a second,
