Roosevelt's Future

If Roosevelt wins, the main principles of the New Deal programme will be pushed forward with vigour. The President passing through period of doubt (shown in his acceptance speech) is now once more strongly in favour of economic and social planning. This would possibly mean the revival of the ideas om. bodied in the N.R.A. and a centralized policy of agricultural control. "There would be no retrenchment in Government spending and an approach to Ealanced budget would be attempted by higher taxes, Taxation would be used not only a revenue instrument but as a means of social control and as 2 curb upon the growth of "big business." "Owing to the high rate of Government expenditures business 8 whole would continue. to Improve, though the heavy goods. industries would lag behind the consumer goods industries. There would be a, tendency towards inflation and a teat would be made of the various. controls in the hands of the Federal Reserve Board and the Securites Exchange Commission. Business im-Provement is fed by borrowing, Just it was prior to 1929, though this time the Government borrows, not the spesulstor or investor.

If London wins there would probably be a slight slump in consump-lon goods owing to the removal inflationary possibilities, but on the positive side London would probably be able to accomplish little owing to 2 hostile Senate. One-third of the 'Senate is elected every two years and. it Is a mathematical impossibility for the Republicans to secure a majority. Even if Hoovers wins the Pres dency however there is a possibility that' the Republicans will Have a majority in the House. "In that case President Roosevelt would be able {to socomplish as little as his rival 'A. rota of 1,590 cases wore set down for hearing in the Probate and Diveree Division for the Michaelmas 'Term, which began in the second week' of this month, Despite the arrears which have been accruing, this is only 121 more than in the corresponding Term last year, In the. Chancery Division 174 actions awalt Hearing, compared with 213 in the: corresponding term last year, and. the Companies Court 100 matters are to be dealt with, against 130 last Michaelmas. Sitting as a ~Divisional Court the Judges of the King's Bench Division will hear 98 appeals, 30 fewer. For trial in tha King's Bench Division there are 85 special jury actions, compared with 127; 39 comtion jury cases, against 53 on-jury actions, against $85, Commercial cases number 19, one fewer than last Michaelmas, "and short causes, at 31, are eight fewer. Even the New Procedure lst has shrunk from 180 non-jury actions to 94. This fives a total list for the King's Bene Division of 483 cases, compared with 810.
