Ruler's Careful Upbringing

Crown Prince Farouk was born at Cairo on February 11, 1920, His birth was announced' to the people of Egypt by a salute of 101 guns and greeted with considerable joining, which was reflected the following year in the enthusiastic receptions accorded to his father, then the Sultan Fuad, during a tour of the provinces.

King Fuad as he became in 1922, when the British Government recognized Egypt's independence, planned Farouk's education with the greatest care. He desired above all that his son should grow up to be useful, for, as he himself said in the days when he was Prince Ahmed Fuad and had no idea of ascending the throne: "It is nothing to be a prince, but it is something to be useful.

From his earliest childhood Farouk was given only instrüctive presents and toys which required a certain amount of attention, with the result that he rapidly developed the habit of profitable amusements, By the time he was fifteen, he was a very keen reader, most of his books being in English, a stamp cóllector, a good amateur. photographer, and a clever all-round sportsman, He speaks both English and French fluently, having learnt English from the English nurses who brought him up from birth.—Reuter.
