Sim—It is with a feeling of disgust that one reads of the partial lifting of the curfew and the allowing of the opening of cabarets by the S.M.C, and FMC. If these august bodies consider, the war around Shanghai finished, well and good but where on earth do they get their information. The police have had a most dangerous and overworked job and have done it magnificently and now thousands of people are to be allowed to clutter the streets again until 11.30 p.m, giving them extra work and the possibility of extra casualties.
Regarding the cabarets of which there were already far too many in Shanghai, one has only to look ahead and without being pessimistic consider what is going to be the financial position of the average man in Shanghai when all this slaughter and destruction of property is over. Many firms will have to cut salaries and staffs but the cabarets are going to be allowed to have a final dig at the already depleted pocket books of the gen-orel public. Why not encourage the opening of the picture houses at 230 and 5.30 in the afternoons when people can forget the horrors of war for a few hours for 60 cents Discusten, Shanghai, Sept. 2
