TROLLEY BUSES

'The zenith of the trolley bus as a substitute for the tramear is fast approaching in Britain, especially in' London where more and more miles. of ty mway track are being abolished with a consequent "improvement in the movement of trae. In the suburban areas of the metropolis 82 miles have been taken up and another 132 miles will be removed to complete the change, which is not exclusive to London but is seen in provincial towns and cities where 4 similar tendency in public transport Is noted. In London 670 trolley buses are on order and are being delivered as required. The tram routes so far converted sre: Sutton to Croydon, 10 miles; Croydon to Crystal Palace, miles; Aden, Hammersmith, Bdgware, 123% miles; Paddington, Stone-bridge Park, Wembley and Sudbury, miles. On the Paddington-Sudbury. route, the whole distance is being covered by trolley buses in about 35 minutes—a saving over tramcars of about six minutes. The gain in pas sengers has been most remarkable—from 20 to 25 per cent. Many people are writing to the London Passenger Transport Board offering to buy the old tramcars, but unfortunately the Board are not permitted to do this. Each tram removed from the streets Is scrapped and the parts are put to new uses, so that the man who wanted a tram to use as an office on a. building estate, and the man who. wanted two trams to convert Into a bungalow, are disappointed. Under present Parliamentary Bills the Board, can replace tramcars by trolley' buses on 200 miles out of 328, and it is hoped to carry the programme. through by 19%
