There will be no St. Andrew's Ball this year. This was unanimously decided upon by members of the St. Andrew's Society at their annual meeting held yesterday at he Palace Hotel. Mr. W. B. O. Middleton, Who took the chair in place of Dr.
A. C. Bryson, at present away on holiday, said that a ball might be thought unsuitable at a time of crisis as the present. The Ewo Handicap will however, be held as usual on November 30. In order to assist the Societys funds, it was decided at yesterday's meeting to raise a subscription from members in connection with St, Andrew's Day. At first, it was suggested by the acting president that a limit should be put on the subscription, but it was later decided to place no maximum on the amount to be subscribed by each member.
The annual report of the Society, previously circulated to members, stated that the accounts showed a debit balance of $1,069.21 owing to the continued heavy charitable disbursements. Collections made by ihe hon. treasurer on account of subscriptions during the year amounted to $2,590 as compared with $2,825 during the previous year. The committee wished to thank the British Chamber of Commerce for their generous donations amounting to $3,000 made to the Society's charity fund.
