Tribute To The Dean

Another guest, and yet not a guest, of the Society was Dean A. C. S. Trivett, who was specially asked to attend the luncheon in recognition of the splendid work which he had done during the last two or three months in coping with the distress among Englishmen and English women owing to the present troubles. As it happened, the catastrophe occurred when the Almoner, the Secretary, and the President were absent from Shanghai, In this emergency the Dean, helped by an en-ergotic sub-committee, took charge of the situation and handled no less than 59 urgent cases of relief. In the process the funds of the Society were drained to the point at which a formidable overdraft had to be incurred, but thanks to the co-opera tion of the Bank the spring of bene-valence was not interrupted on that account. Mr. Wilkinson, amid applause, conveyed the Society's thanks to the Dean for his admirable labours. The recipient of this tribute modestly assured the company that.he had merely performed a service which was pleasing to him.
