Attempts to recover the records for the longest non stop flight and the fastest flight are being considered by the Air'Ministry, although neither is likely to be made till next year.
It ought to be comparatively easy for one of the Wellesley long-range bombers to beat the 6,650 miles record set up by the Russians. The speed record is a more difficult matter.
At present this is held by the German Captain Wurster, who in a new German monoplane fighter, specially prepared, reached a speed of just over 379 miler an-hour. The new Spitfire monoplane of the RAF. should be able at least to equal thi: but, like the German machine, it would need much special preparation.
To'the uninitiated it may seem unnecessary to devote so much money and effort to the capturing of records. But their commercial value may be judged from the fact (which I am assured on good authority is true) that the possession of the "blue ribbon" of the Atlantic is worth £1,000,000 a year to the Company which holds it.
