Periodical Droughts

The farming community in bs country is subject to periodical Groughts of groat severity. Now the farmer who possesses any initiative will be able to make money "hand over fist" during drought seasons. This may sound controversial, but is revortheless a fact which has been proved over and over again. If ai farmer conserves water on his property, usually in the form of a dam; if he conserves materials for winter feed by the silage method. he should successfully cope witn drought conditions. In this way he will have healthy stock for marketing purposes, and will score where "lackadaisical" farmers have failed.

Among other things he must learn which are the foods most suited to live-stock in this country, treatment of diseases in stock, and a host of other really important questions. A great snag in South Africa is soil erosion, very often caused by over stocking the lands. This can also be effectively remedied by the really hard-working farmer.

Up-to-dateness in farming procedure, housing and materials, is of absolute necessity if you are to compete in the farming "trade."

Apropos of the remarks made above. I am merely sounding a note of warning: every farming country has its setbacks, which are peculiar to the country concerned,
