Alleged Agitators Arrested

MOUNTS — Old Capital

Peiping, July 2.

Uneasiness in' Chinese political circles is mounting over the activities of plain-clothes agents, many of whom, have been arrested during the pa; few days, including two found loitering last evening in the vicinity of the offices of the Hopei and Charhar Political Council.

Two of those taken into custody are alleged to have confessed that they had been employed to create disturbances during the elections to the National Assembly, which will meet in Nanking on November 12.

Precautions which may be described as semi-martial law have been enforced here since June 28. Persons found in the streets late at night are liable to be searched at the point of the bayonet, while units of the 29th Army have been brought into the suburbs from Nanyuan and other points.

Japanese sources declare there is no foundation for the Chinese alarm, but point out that the officials here are naturally anxious over the prolonged absence of General Sun Chehyuan, chairman of the Hopei and Charhar Political Council, in Loling, Shantung.

This is generally attributed to the General's desire to escape Japanese pressure for the implementation of economic concessions, including the right to construct the Tientsin-Shihchiachwang railway.—Reuter.
