That precautionary measures be adopted to prevent labour strikes, is ordered by General Chiang Kai-shek, in a telegram to the Greater Shanghai Municipal Government. The order states:
The first and second of July fell at a convenient time this year as they are followed by a Saturday, a half-holiday for most Shanghai office workers, making a four day period of leisure ending up with the Fourth of July celebrations to-morrow.
Taking advantage of this long break just when the weather has been showing signs of the heat which lies ahead, many Shanghailanders made up parties to visit such favourite spots as Hangchow, which proved especially popular, as usual, Those remaining in Shanghai had such pleasant distractions as swimming, tennis and golf. with which to while away their leisure hours. 'A party of sailing enthusiasts left for Minghong on-Thursday,; a Banks and many business houses shut their doors to allow their em-"{ ployees the benefit of the two bank holidays falling on July 1-and 2. Monday brings the holidays to an end, and a return to the weary round once more,
