The Shanghai Race Club "A" team defeated the Rowing Club "A" by five straight matches. The former had the squash rackets title fairly wel] in hand prior to yesterday's affray, but had the Oarsmen brought off a surprise victory by any great margin, the Race Club would probably have had to play off against the Foreign Y.M.C.A. "A", their nearest rivals.
At the "Y" courts, the home team defeated the Country Club "A" by three matches to two, some of the matches being very hard fought, especially that between H. K. Cassells of the Country Chub and L. D. Carson of the Foreign YM.C.A, the former taking the odd game in five to gain the victory.
Of the matches played at the Race Club, that between L. H. Wade and E. J. Palmer provided the best competition. The first two games were shared, and in the third, Palmer held a lead of 7-1, when Wade came up irresistibly and went on to win 9 while~in- the-fourth~ and~ last game, Wade led 7-0, and Palmer came up to tie the score at 7-7 and then again at 8-8, several "hand ins" and "hand outs" being played before the eventual winner gained his point and the match.
D. J. Raeburn, the Rowing Club Ist string, lost to W. Welch in four gam. E. B. Cumine and S. Godkin had a long struggle, the former only just winning after a protracted fight.
