Aerial Ten-Hour Carnage 1

In probably the biggest air raid in history, 400 Italian and German planes to-day bombed the entire Teruel front for ten hours with 1,500 pound bombs in a merciless effort to blast a path for a Nationalist advance into Teruel, a Republican communique received here announced.

The devastating bombardment began shortly after midmorning and did not end until nightfall as the scores of Nationalist planes attacked the Republican first, second and third lunes o? defence and villages fifteen miles behind the front, the announcement said. The attack appeared to have been led by a squadron of late model German warplanes, it was reported.

Republican leaders claimed that despite the smashing aerial attack, the Republicans scored several swift victories north of Teruel and had occupied commanding positions on the Saragossa-Teruel highway. A Republican artillery barrage at dawn, it was claimed, also paved the way for a successful attack on Nationalist lines near Terra de Carcel.

Nationalist troops have been driving on Teruel for several weeks in a desperate effort to recapture the city after its fall into the hands of the Republicans—United Press.
