Nearer Shanghai

Coming nearer to Shanghai, it may be noted that several times within the past few years, tigers have been reported and specimens actually shot in. the Hangchow area. Further south, in Fukien Province, tigers are sufficiently abundant to be a menace and even la scourge to the rural inhabitants, taking a steady toll of the cattle of the villagers as they are let out to graze on the mountain sides, and often killing and carrying off human victims. They are particularly numerous in the Fu-tsing district south of Foochow, and in the Yenping area up the Min River, where the well known missionary, the Rev. Harry R. Caldwell, has shot over a dozen tigers in the past twenty years, while his trusted native servant, Dada, claims at least a score to his own gun, It was in the Fu-tsing district that Mr, Caldwell twice saw the famous "Blue Tiger," which several hunters and sportsmen have tried to bag, but which has never been brought to book for the killing and eating of many villagers in the area it ravaged.
