Heavy Casualties

Peiping, Feb. 15.

Heavy casualties are being suffered by both the Japanese and Chinese in the severe fighting now in progress on the Peiping-Hankow Railway front, according to reports received here.

The Japanese claim to have killed nearly 10,000 Chinese troops in the past five days, during which they are said to have advanced forty miles from their base in North Honan, Changteh, to points south of Chihsien.

The Japanese, however, are reported to have been faced hitherto Only by the worst Chinese troops, those belonging to General Sung Cheh-yuan, who was ousted from Peiping at the beginning of the present war, and the former Manchurian troops commanded by General Wan Fu-lin.
