Earlier in his speech, the Prime Minister said that his own views on the foreign policy of the country were that it should be based on the following three principles:
1. The protection of British interests and the lives of British nationals; 2. The maintenance of peace so far as Britain could influence it and the settlement of differences by peaceful means; 3. The promotion of friendly relations with other countries, which were willing to reciprocate and keep the rules of international conduct without which there "could be neither' security nor stability.
When the Prime Minister entered the House of Commons this afternoon, following a luncheon with Their Majesties at Buckingham Palace, he was greeted with cheers from the Ministerial benches and some boos from the Opposition.
Both Mr. Eden and Lord Cranborne, the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs who also resigned, received a great ovation which lasted for two minutes. On their entry there was cheering from both the Opposition and some parts of the Government benches.
