GRAND NATIONAL

FANCIES

A friend of mine who follows steeplechasing very closely tells me that his fancies for the Grand National are Dunhill Castle and Don Bradman. The former is a brilliant jumper and has only run in five events, and won four of them.

I saw Don Bradman last spring; he looks the part all right. He is quite the right type of Aintree horse, and hat merit that after being brought down by a fallen horse, he completed the course in "solitary grandeur" without putting a foot wrong. We know that there is a certain amount of luck attached to winning any race, but it must be pretty well all chance in a race like the National.

In one of the sporting papers a little while back, it was stated that recently a fancy yet had been made that Frank Butters would make a clean sweep of all the classic races. Without any desire to be uncharitable, I do hope this will not be so—it would be so dull! He has no doubt a pretty good chance of appropriating the Thousand Guineas and Oaks with three such animals as Stafaralla, Radiant and Anne of Austria, while the colts are represented by Tahir, Mirza LI and Khan Bahadur.
