KESWICK RD. AFFAIR

To the Editor of the *"Nowru-CHiwA Dany NEWS" read in your paper to-day, in connection with the shooting of a Chinese in Keswick Road, the very recrimination that I was hoping would never be levelled at the "morth-China Daily News" viz, "this is not the first time that this newspaper has sacrificed the truth in favour of national interests."

Our destinies should not be prejudiced because a member of your Staff seeks. to justify a statement made in the paper at the possible expense of truth. Whether the Chinese died on the spot or three hours later, is not so relevant, "because a dying man, to all appearances may be has been brought forward by you dead, and no proof masses,

that he was not absconding with the -copper wire. The fact that "a foreigner who visited the scene shortly after, did not see'a roll of wire" proves nothing. Our national interests are not in any way favoured by such a negative statement, Unless we can conduct a difücult situation inspired with the desire to be truthful, sympathetic and honourable, we shall get nowhere that is anywhere. You are to be complimented on the able handling of your paper's policy, and on the tact and ability with which you have obviously striven to navigate difficult waters. May I suggest that you go a little farther, and, instead of doing the humanly nice thing by excusing your staff member, you do the kinder and perhaps juster things by impressing upon him that no interests, national or otherwise, are saved by petty recriminations?
