Shanghai Kerchief Store

I don't think it can be possible to find anywhere else in the world such lovely handkerchiefs as you can buy in China. And as the people who possess too many handkerchiefs are about as rare as bustards, it is safe to say that anyone who gives handkerchiefs to departing travellers will receive genuine thanks. The Shanghai Kerchief Store, which has two shops in the Central Arcade in Nanking Road, dedicates itself to handkerchiefs.

Here you may see handkerchiefs of such delicacy and beauty that they would be accepted with delight by a royal duchess, The wise thing io do is to order them in good time and have the name or monogram of the benefited embroidered on each. This takes a very short time—about 24 hours. The full name is the better idea—for handkerchiefs are often dropped, and it is a great temptation not to be able to find the owner of a really good one. If, however, the handkerchief is plainly marked Daphne when the finder's name is Helen it won't exactly add style to her and she will therefore probably place it in the hands of the deck steward.

To every customer who spends $25 the manager gives a pair of Cantoaese embroidered satin slippers, or a Chinese doll—fascinating old gentlemen with bald head and. whiskers and suchlike joys.
