Civilians Attack Foreigner In Hongkew Because of Alleged Horn-Blowing Mr. J. dos Remedios, a British subject, was attacked and wounded about the face and left hand yesterday morning by two Japanese civilians while sitting in a motor-car parked in Changchun Road, near North Szechuen Road. He was pulled out of the car, beaten with a stick and with pieces of brick, bitten in the left forefinger by one of his assailants, and pulled by his necktie and other clothing.
The alleged "crime" for which Mr. dos Remedios was punished by the two Japanese, who are reported to be unemployed carpenters recently arrived in Shanghai, was that he "honked his horn" as he pulled into the kerb in Changchun Road. Actually, according to information given to the Municipal Police, it was a Japanese car behind the Briton's vehicle which was responsible for the horn-tooting.
Mr. dos Remedios, who is on the staff of Messrs. Algar & Company agents for the North End Court Apartm arrived in his car with Mr. W. W. Monk, resident manager. of the Apartments, at. about 9.30 a.m. Because of the fancied insult to them. the two Japanese carpenters ran to the side of the car, where one of them gave the door a hard kick while the other picked up a piece of wood and started to hit the startled driver.
Then the Japanese pulled Mr. dos Remedios out of the driver's seat and continued the treatment on the pavement.
